4WD lever will not stay put: quick checks and simple adjustments

Often caused by linkage, bushings, or a worn connection point.

When to use this guide: It pops out of 4H or 4L or feels loose.

Overview

A transfer case lever that pops back to neutral or won't stay where you put it usually has a simple cause, worn pivot bushings at the base of the shifter, a loose linkage pin, or a detent spring that's not holding. The bushings and linkage are easy to check from inside the cab without getting under the vehicle.
