Cooling baseline for a new-to-you XJ: what to inspect first

A short list of cooling checks that prevents the most common breakdowns.

When to use this guide: You just bought an XJ or you want to reset the baseline.

Overview

When you buy a used Cherokee, assume the cooling system hasn't been touched in years. The thermostat, hoses, fan clutch, and coolant condition are quick to check and cheap to replace, and they're the parts most likely to strand you. Do the baseline check before you put any miles on it and you'll avoid the most common XJ breakdowns.
